Planning Your First Amtrak Trip: Route, Seat, Luggage and Arrival Checklist

Treat the train journey as part of the trip. Start with the actual schedule and stations, then decide how much time and comfort your itinerary needs.

Start with stations, not city names

Check where the departure and arrival stations are relative to your accommodation. Add the cost and time of getting to each station. A route that looks convenient on a national map may require a long transfer at one end.

Compare the complete journey

Onboard amenities vary by train. Review the operator's current route information rather than assuming that every service has the same dining, Wi-Fi or accommodation. Amtrak's official onboard overview is linked below.

Leave a buffer after arrival

Avoid putting a nonrefundable event or a tight onward connection immediately after a long-distance arrival. If attending a wedding, concert or departure you cannot miss, consider arriving earlier and using the extra time to explore locally.

Pack for the hours aboard

• Keep documents, medication and valuables in an accessible small bag.
• Bring charging cables, headphones and downloaded entertainment.
• Check baggage size, quantity and station services for your itinerary.
• Plan food and water around the services available on your train.

Make a realistic first itinerary

For a first rail break, compare a direct route with one requiring a connection. Write down the experience you want: a relaxed city arrival, a scenic daytime ride or an overnight journey. Choose the option that supports that experience rather than the one with the longest route description.

Book accommodation with your arrival time in mind. Confirm late check-in procedures if needed, and save the station-to-hotel route offline.
