U.S. citizens traveling between the mainland and Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands generally do not need a passport, according to USAGov. Hawaii is a U.S. state. Write down your three priorities: for example, beach access, a walkable neighborhood and one guided outing. Use those priorities to judge the location of a hotel rather than choosing solely from its pool photograph.
Calculate the full stay
- Accommodation total for your dates, including disclosed taxes and fees.
- Transportation from the airport and around the island.
- Parking, meals and any equipment rentals you expect to use.
- Cancellation deadlines for accommodation and activities.
Check whether the beach you want is actually accessible from the property. “Ocean view,” “waterfront” and direct beach access describe different things. Ask about stairs, transport and accessibility when those details matter to your group.
Leave room for weather and ocean conditions
Build a plan you can rearrange. Put a flexible activity next to a weather-dependent one, follow local beach flags and lifeguard advice, and check official alerts close to departure. A promotional photo is not a report on conditions for your visit.

Use the TSA identification page for airport screening requirements. Confirm your complete route, including connections, with the carrier. Save booking confirmations and transport details offline, and leave enough time for the return journey from your island base.
