Start with the picking notice, not the store hours

Grandad’s is in Hendersonville, south of Asheville. Its store and bakery currently list daily hours of 8 a.m.–6 p.m., but that does not mean every activity runs for those same ten hours. The farm’s main page describes you-pick on select weekends; its activity page gives the maze an earlier closing time and limits the cow train and apple cannon to weekends.

The current harvest notice, checked September 21, lists Rosalee for you-pick alongside pumpkins and flowers. Treat that as a snapshot, not a reservation for September 26–27. Before leaving, confirm that picking is open that day and that the specific crop you want is still available.

Best fit: visitors who want a manageable farm outing with an orchard, bakery and optional activities. A weekday can work for the market and maze, but it is a poor substitute for a weekend if the cow train is your child’s main reason to go. Activity schedule ↗

Build your budget around separate purchases

A current complete admission and picking-price list was not verified for this guide. Do not treat an old review’s price as a 2026 offer. Ask these four questions together: is there an orchard entry charge, what does the picking container cost, which activities need separate tickets, and how are pumpkins and cut flowers priced?

For a family of four, write the total as entry for everyone who needs a ticket + one agreed apple quantity + selected activities + food + pumpkins or flowers. Decide which extras matter before arriving. A farm visit can become expensive through several small purchases even when no single charge looks large.

If you mainly want apples for a recipe, compare the pre-picked selection with the variety currently available for picking. Buying the right cooking apple from a bin may serve that purpose better than insisting on you-pick. If the experience is the point, choose a realistic bag size you will actually use.

A practical order for your visit

  1. Check the crop and weather first. Save the day’s schedule before driving from Asheville. For flower photos, ask about current blooms specifically.
  2. Do the priority activity while everyone has energy. If that is apple picking, start there. Keep fruit out of the way of play activities and avoid carrying a large pumpkin through the maze.
  3. Take a bakery break. The farm lists cider donuts, pies and cider drinks. Choose treats as part of the budget instead of assuming food comes with an activity ticket.
  4. Leave a closing-time buffer. The maze and weekend attractions stop before the store closes. A late afternoon arrival can miss the experience you came for.

Sunflowers, pumpkins and the apple festival are not one event

The flower listing makes Grandad’s worth checking for a September combination outing, but it does not establish a fixed sunflower festival date or guarantee peak bloom. Ask whether cutting is open and whether flowers are charged by stem or container. Stay in designated picking areas.

Likewise, Hendersonville’s North Carolina Apple Festival ran September 4–7, 2026 and has ended. Orchard visits later in September are separate from that downtown festival. Plan for a farm day, not a festival street closure or vendor lineup.

Where to stay if you are making a weekend of it

Choose Hendersonville when the farm area is your main focus, or Asheville when most of the rest of your itinerary is there. Compare your full route before booking; do not move hotels just to be slightly closer to one farm stop.

Sources and visitor context

Checked September 21, 2026: Grandad’s official visit information and the crop/activity pages above. A September 2026 visitor discussion describes the mix of picking, maze and children’s activities; it is not used as a price guarantee. The 2026 festival information confirms the earlier Labor Day dates.

Before booking, confirm current prices, entry rules, opening hours, and road conditions with the official provider.
