Choose Conway Scenic's Mountaineer for Crawford Notch; choose a shorter train if your main goal is a quick ride with young children. The Mountaineer takes roughly four to 4½ hours. Its best mountain sections are the reason to go, but it is still a long return journey with quieter stretches between the highlights.
Our seat pick: Coach for value, Comfort for extra room, Dome for a deliberate scenic splurge.
Food decision: order a boxed lunch at least 48 hours ahead or plan around onboard snacks.
Local combination: maple treats at Zeb's and grilled cheese after the train.

Where to board and how to plan parking
Use 38 Norcross Circle, North Conway, the historic station. Allow around an hour before your booked departure for parking, ticket questions and boarding. Do your shopping after the train if finding a space takes longer than expected.
Parking cost: a current station parking fee is not published in the operator pages checked for this guide. Do not assume either paid or free parking from that omission. Ask 603-356-5251 where passengers should park for the full trip and whether a fee applies. A short-stay retail space is not a safe plan for a four-hour excursion.
When you park, read the time limit as carefully as the price. Boarding time plus the ride plus lunch can easily turn this into a six-hour visit. Keep any parking receipt and allow room in the schedule to move to an appropriate long-stay space before checking in.
Coach, Comfort and Dome: compare the whole bill
The Mountaineer fare page lists these high-season prices. Adult means 13+, child means 4–12, and toddler means 3 and under. Food is extra in every class.
| Class | High-season adult / child / toddler | Best use and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Coach | $83 / $63 / $31 | Best for keeping the trip affordable. Classic seats, opening windows and heat; less space and climate comfort than Comfort. |
| Comfort | $130 / $79 / $48 | More legroom, larger seats and air conditioning. Worth considering for comfort needs; adds a meaningful amount for a family. |
| Observation Dome | $198 / $160 / $110 | Elevated curved-glass views. Best when the car experience matters; stairs, reflections and a steep fare increase remain. |
At those rates, two adults and two children cost $292 in Coach, $418 in Comfort or $716 in Dome, before food and any additional checkout charges. Comfort adds $126 to that family outing; Dome adds $424. For two adults, Dome is $230 more than Coach. Those are useful comparisons when deciding whether to upgrade or keep money for another White Mountains activity.
The railroad FAQ explains the car layouts and accessibility limits. Dome is not wheelchair accessible; other accommodations are limited and should be discussed in advance. Do not buy the most expensive class assuming it will be easiest to board.
Our recommendation: choose Comfort when personal space and air conditioning solve a real comfort problem. Choose Dome for a special rail experience, not because you expect an unobstructed photo every minute. Glass, sun angle and the location of trees still affect what you see.
What is sold aboard—and can you bring lunch?
Outside food is prohibited. There is a conflict in the operator's drink wording: its general FAQ permits nonalcoholic beverages, while the Mountaineer page says no outside food or beverages. Confirm your departure's rule before relying on bringing drinks; plan to purchase them aboard if you have not received clarification.
Typical snack-bar items include hot dogs, nachos, cookies and packaged snacks, with hot/cold beverages and adult drinks. Stock varies. For a proper lunch, pre-order at least 48 hours before departure; leftover boxes may be sold aboard but are not guaranteed.
Which boxed lunch should you choose?
The listed options include ham or turkey with American cheese on Hawaiian rolls, plus chips and a whoopie pie. A PB&J children's meal is also shown. The menu lists a chicken-salad bowl and a curried-chickpea wrap as alternatives, but its allergy notes conflict with some dietary labels. Anyone who needs a specific allergen-free meal should call rather than treating the menu label as a guarantee.
Practical plan: eat breakfast before an early train, reserve lunch if you need it, then save your local restaurant meal for the return. On an afternoon departure, eat a proper lunch in North Conway before boarding and buy a smaller snack aboard. Do not purchase a takeaway sandwich in town assuming you can carry it onto the train.
North Conway shops and food that fit the day
Zeb's General Store: maple candy without a long meal stop
2675 White Mountain Highway. Zeb's General Store is a good browsing stop for candy, New England specialty foods and gifts. If you want something connected to the region, look for maple candy or a small bottle of local maple syrup rather than buying a generic souvenir.
Shop after your ride if possible. It avoids carrying glass bottles all afternoon and removes the temptation to keep browsing while boarding approaches. Check the label for where syrup is made; shelf space alone does not mean every product is from New Hampshire.
Cheese Louise: grilled cheese and tomato soup
Use the downtown Cheese Louise at 2686 South Main Street, not a different outlet. The menu offers the Vermonter with Cabot cheddar and muenster, the Baconator for a bacon option, and the Godmother with mozzarella, pesto and tomato. Pair a sandwich with tomato soup on a cool day if that sounds better than a second train snack.
The soup contains dairy; do not infer “vegan” from the tomato name. Restaurant prices and seasonal specials can change, so choose from the current menu when you arrive. A simple counter-service meal is easier to fit around the train than a reservation that depends on an exact return time.
How to fit both without rushing
- Before the ride: park for the full stay, eat breakfast or lunch, and finish food before boarding.
- On the train: have the preordered box or a snack; keep your camera ready for the crew's scenic announcements.
- After returning: walk into town for Cheese Louise, then browse Zeb's if its hours allow.
- If the train returns late: prioritize food, skip shopping, and avoid turning a relaxing ride into a deadline chase.
Mountaineer, Hiker's Ticket and holiday trains
The regular Mountaineer runs through Crawford Notch, including the celebrated bridge and cliff sections. The shorter Valley Train is a different route; it does not deliver the same Notch journey. Check the named excursion rather than booking solely by departure time.
The separate Hiker's Ticket uses selected two-train days to create a long Crawford layover and an approximately 8½-hour outing. A standard Mountaineer ticket is not permission to leave the train for several hours and catch any later service.
Winter Mountaineer changes the seasonal setting. Halloween Express is a shorter family event with costumes, characters and treats. Use the current event calendar to distinguish a mountain excursion from a themed children's ride; snow or peak autumn color is never guaranteed simply by the ticket name.
What makes the trip feel worth it?
Book because you enjoy unhurried rail travel and the Notch landscape. If four hours sitting sounds frustrating, a cheaper seat will not fix the mismatch. Firsthand rider accounts are useful for the rhythm of the day, but use current operator rules for meals and boarding rather than an older trip report.
For photos through glass, avoid flash and bright reflections close to the window. Follow the crew's side-switching instructions; do not spend the entire ride defending one seat as if every view is on one side. Bring a quiet activity for children and leave enough energy for the drive afterward.

Make the morning easier
If the drive would require a very early start, compare an overnight stay in North Conway, New Hampshire. Check the actual drive to the boarding address, parking charges and cancellation deadline before choosing a room. A cabin outside town can add more driving than its listing suggests.
