The Hiwassee Loop is a train day, not a shopping excursion. There is no restaurant-and-boutique layover in the middle. Choose it for river scenery and railroad engineering, pack food for the ride, and place your local food stops before or after the train.
Trip: about 4½ hours and 50 miles round trip.
Best value: Coach. Special-occasion choice: a dome seat if you can manage stairs.
Essential: a satisfying packed snack or light lunch, not just an expectation of a dining car.

Departure address, parking and the time-zone trap
Board at 9406 Highway 411, Delano, TN 37325. This is not Chattanooga's Grand Junction Station and not the old L&N depot museum in Etowah. Put the full address into navigation before driving.
Parking: the county visitor guide identifies free train-side parking at Delano; the operator also lists free parking for its Delano holiday service. Follow the current event instructions and signs. Allow about an hour before departure for parking and boarding rather than counting on arriving at the last minute. The Delano directions identify the correct boarding area.
Coming from Nashville or another Central Time location? Delano uses Eastern Time. A 1:30 p.m. Eastern departure is 12:30 p.m. Central. Check the time shown on your ticket before calculating your drive.
Hiwassee Loop seats: what the upgrade buys
Below are posted fall fares where the operator supplies them; “from” prices are general starting prices, not confirmed fall fares. Availability depends on which historic cars operate that day. See the current car and fare list.
| Seat / listed fare | Why choose it? | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Coach Fall: adult $65; child 2–12 $50 | Same route at the lowest clear fall price. | Ordinary seating; no premium snack package. |
| Signature Lounge All ages; from $60 | Individual chairs, large windows, snacks and drinks. | Check the fall quote; a lounge is not an elevated dome. |
| Crown, lower 9410 Fall: adult $90; child $75 | No internal dome stairs; snack package. | Lower viewing angle; not a guarantee of wheelchair access. |
| 9410 Dome All ages; fall $130 | Elevated glass views; family-friendly age policy. | Stairs and a substantial premium for every traveler. |
| Algonquin Dome 14+; fall $130 | Raised panoramic seating for older travelers. | Not suitable for a family with younger children. |
| Algonquin Observation 14+; fall $115 | Large-window observation setting. | Different perspective from a dome; verify the car layout. |
| 1877 Parlor 14+; from $85 | An alternative premium historic-car setting. | Confirm the date-specific fall price before comparing. |
| 1877 Observation 14+; fall $115 | Observation seating without the full dome fare. | Age restriction and boarding steps still matter. |
| 1877 Dome package Fall listing $300 | Potential option for a small party. | The page mixes “Quad” and “2 guests” wording. Call to confirm capacity and total; do not assume four seats. |
Our recommendation: start with Coach if you are testing whether your family enjoys long scenic trains. Two adults and two children cost $230 at the listed fall Coach rates. Four $130 dome seats would be $520: a $290 difference before food. Spend that difference only if the elevated view is genuinely central to your trip.
A premium snack box is a convenience, not a reason to skip lunch. Historic-car accessibility also needs a direct conversation: TVRM says its Delano cars cannot accommodate wheelchair use inside. Call 423-894-8028 with your boarding and seating needs before buying.
Bring lunch? Yes—and it makes this trip easier
The Delano FAQ permits food and beverages, but prohibits alcohol. A commissary sells refreshments, snacks and souvenirs. An exact current hot-food menu is not published, so do not rely on a specific sandwich or hot meal being stocked.
For a 4½-hour ride, bring a compact sandwich or wrap, fruit that travels well, a drink and a napkin. Keep packaging easy to open at your seat and take waste to a bin. A small reusable container is more manageable than a sprawling picnic spread. If you purchase cold perishable food before a long drive, keep it appropriately chilled until you eat.
Eat before the scenery you most want to photograph rather than waiting until you are hungry and the commissary line is busiest. For children, divide snacks into two small portions so there is something left for the return leg. Verify allergy-related needs directly; a generic snack box may not suit them.

Local shops and food: plan them around the train
Savannah Oaks Winery & Gift Shop
1817 Delano Road, Delano. The state's Pick Tennessee listing identifies fruit and muscadine wines plus gourmet cheeses. It is a useful stop for an adult souvenir or a cheese purchase if the day's hours fit. Make this a separate drive before or after the railway; the train does not stop at the winery. Any wine purchase should remain sealed and off the train.
Scottie's Diner: a proper meal after the ride
1202 Tennessee Avenue, Etowah. If snacks were enough aboard, finish with a diner meal. The merchant's posted ordering menu includes a bacon cheeseburger and a pintos, fried potatoes and cornbread plate. The first suits a burger craving; the second is a more regional comfort-food choice. Delivery prices can differ from dining-room prices, so use the menu to choose food rather than as a fixed dine-in quote.
Call ahead if you are returning late or traveling on a holiday. Do not order pickup for an exact minute tied to the train's scheduled arrival: allow for unloading and a possible rail delay, then order once you know your return time.
The commissary souvenir stop
The onboard commissary is also a practical place to browse a small train souvenir. That is more realistic than trying to squeeze an Etowah museum visit into an afternoon with an uncertain return. The depot museum is a separate attraction, and its hours may end before your train day does.
Fall Loop versus the Santa train
The Loop's advertised 2026 operating season is March 29–November 22 on selected dates. Fall fares are higher; the lower-priced family offer is not a fall deal. Choose the departure for its length and scenery first, then use current leaf reports to set expectations.
The Hiwassee Holiday Train is a much shorter December family outing—less than an hour—with Santa, a cookie, chocolate milk and a bell. Selected dates are December 5–22, 2026. It does not deliver the same long Loop itinerary. For a preschooler's first train, that shorter format may be the better purchase.
A day that does not feel rushed
- Eat a substantial meal before reaching Delano and pack food for the train.
- Arrive early, confirm your car and use the restroom.
- Enjoy the river sections; cooperate with the requested side change so passengers share views.
- After unloading, choose one local stop—dinner or a shop—based on its actual closing time.
Choose another route if shopping during the ride is essential. The Copperhill excursion serves that purpose, but requires a much longer day. The Loop works best when sitting back and watching the landscape is itself the activity.
Make the morning easier
If the drive would require a very early start, compare an overnight stay in Etowah, Tennessee. Check the actual drive to the boarding address, parking charges and cancellation deadline before choosing a room. A cabin outside town can add more driving than its listing suggests.
