Cider Hill Farm: a clear apple-picking budget

Address: 45 Fern Avenue, Amesbury. The 2026 picking options are $16 for a half-peck bag admitting up to two pickers, $32 for a peck admitting up to four, and $48 for a half-bushel admitting up to six. Anyone age three or older entering the orchard needs to be covered, even if they only take photos.

Parking and general farm access are free. Pumpkin shopping is at a pumpkin stand; do not confuse it with a field where you cut pumpkins from vines. Tickets appear roughly 48–72 hours ahead as crop and weather conditions are assessed. The store is normally open daily 8 a.m.–6 p.m.; check the day's picking availability separately. Our take: this is the easiest of these choices to budget around a shared picking bag. For four covered pickers, the listed $32 option is an $8-per-person orchard outing before food, pumpkins and transport. It makes sense when picking is the point; do not pay for an activity-heavy farm simply because its attraction list is longer.

Lookout Farm: apples and playtime in South Natick

Address: 89 Pleasant Street, South Natick. U-pick passes include the corn maze, three play areas and Busy Bee ride. Regular orchard opening is 10 a.m. Tuesday–Sunday. Tuesday–Thursday last entry is 4 p.m.; Friday–Sunday it is 4:45 p.m. On the latter days, the pumpkin field and some play areas finish earlier than the orchard's 6:30 p.m. closing.

Book for the orchard, not the restaurant clock. A late lunch reservation does not mean you can arrive late for picking. Outside food and pets are not allowed. Check the current pass price and fruit allocation before paying; no unverified admission estimate is included here. Lookout Farm's current hours and passes ↗

For a family with mixed interests, agree on the order before arrival: fruit first, one play session next, then food. That avoids carrying a heavy bag through every attraction and discovering that the part you came for has closed.

Sauchuk: choose September 26 or 27 for a maze day

Address: 200 Center Street, Plympton. The announced 2026 season runs weekends September 19–October 31, plus October 12, from 9 a.m.–6 p.m. The farm lists a corn maze, pumpkin and apple picking, jumping pillows, a cow train and other attractions. Advance tickets are recommended.

Best fit: families who will actually use several activities. Check your chosen date's ticket price and which purchases are extra; the presence of picking on an activity list does not mean fruit or pumpkins are included. Sauchuk schedule and tickets ↗

A day that does not turn into a farm marathon

  1. Before leaving: confirm the open picking crop, weather, admission for every person and the last entry time. Save the address offline.
  2. First part of the visit: do your priority activity while everyone is fresh. For a maze, agree on an exit or turnaround plan before starting.
  3. Middle of the day: take a food and restroom break. Check outside-food rules rather than relying on another farm's policy.
  4. Finish: buy bulky pumpkins and bakery items near departure if the farm's layout and closing times allow.

Visitor discussions often separate the pleasures of picking and cider from frustration with the total bill. The useful lesson is to count admission + picking + food + pumpkins + paid extras before choosing. An older review's price is not a current quote.

What about sunflower gardens?

Do not assume late-September sunflowers. A confirmed September sunflower opening was not established for these three recommendations. If flowers are the entire purpose of your trip, ask for a current bloom update before booking anything. Apple and pumpkin availability does not prove that a sunflower field is still in bloom.

Stay overnight only if it improves the route

Boston residents can treat these as individual day trips. For visitors adding a farm day to a weekend, choose your hotel after deciding whether you are heading toward Amesbury, Natick or Plympton. Compare parking and the next day's route; a downtown hotel is not automatically the most convenient farm base.

Research notes

Schedules and prices were checked against the linked farm pages on September 21, 2026. Practical trade-offs also drew on visitor discussions about picking and cider; older anecdotes were not used as current prices or crowd forecasts. Recommendations are editorial synthesis, not a claimed personal visit.
