COLUMBIA · THE DATE CHANGES THE DAY

At the South Carolina State Fair, choosing a date is part of choosing a budget. The fair runs October 15–25, 2026, but October 24 shares the neighborhood with the South Carolina–Tennessee football game. Official fair parking rises from $10 to $20 that Saturday, and the organizer warns of heavy traffic. For a family coming for the fair rather than football, another date is worth considering before you buy anything.

Tickets, parking and visitor rules checked October 10, 2026.

A good plan starts outside the gate

The fair’s parking notice directs drivers to Gate 6 at 901 George Rogers Boulevard, Gate 7 at 1041 George Rogers Boulevard, or Gate 10 at 901 Bluff Road. Payment is by credit/debit card or Apple Pay. Accessible spaces are first-come with the appropriate state-issued placard or plate. Capacity can close a gate; a purchased admission ticket does not reserve a parking spot.

For a passenger drop-off, use the North Gate at 1200 Rosewood Drive. It is a drop-off and pickup area, not somewhere to leave the car. Keeping those two addresses separate prevents an avoidable loop with tired children. For a Georgia road trip, enter your actual departure point and chosen parking gate into navigation; October 24 is not a sensible day for a tight arrival promise.

There is more than one way to save

The official price list shows advance admission through October 14 at $10 in participating Circle K stores or $11 online, including the listed service fee. Children 5 and under are free. General gate admission is $20, but opening day, Thursday October 15, has a $5 gate offer. For four paying guests, opening-day entry plus ordinary parking comes to $30 before other spending.

Admission and rides are separate. Advance ride vouchers are $32 at participating Circle K stores or $33 online. Each can become a one-day unlimited-ride wristband or a shareable 90-ticket ride card. For two keen riders, two online vouchers add $66 to the family’s admission-and-parking example. Before choosing unlimited rides, compare each child’s height, interest and patience with the individual ride requirements.

Buying a pass is not the same as using its value. If one child loves rides and another wants animals and food, give them different plans instead of automatically buying identical packages.

Pick one included show and one food adventure

The 2026 program includes daily CIRCUS performances beside the Ellison Building near the South Gate, at 2 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The approximately 40-minute show is included with fair admission. It can be the fixed point around which you browse exhibits and choose a ride, rather than another item to squeeze into a full schedule.

Food is part of the appeal: the announced lineup includes new deep-fried birria tacos and key lime crunch funnel cake, alongside returning favorites. A Fair Food for $5 menu covers selected items, not every vendor or a guaranteed full meal. Choose one thing to share, check the posted portion and price, and save room to change your mind. No personal tasting or vendor ranking is implied here.

The bag you bring matters

The clear-bag policy limits bags to 12 × 6 × 12 inches. Medical items and a diaper bag accompanying a baby may be approved after inspection. One sealed bottle of water or one empty refillable bottle is permitted. Outside food is generally prohibited; the food-allergy exception process requires advance notice of at least 24 hours.

Measure the bag itself before leaving, including its depth. A product described as “stadium approved” is not the fair’s approval. The preparation image above is an AI illustration, not a measured or approved product recommendation. Comfortable ordinary clothes are the better choice here: the fair prohibits costumes and cosplay unless specifically authorized.

Match the day to your child

The October 22 Sensory Friendly Morning offers reduced lights and sound from 10 a.m. to noon. Guests with sensory processing disabilities can enter at 10 a.m.; public gates open at 11. The published offer admits an eligible guest and one accompanying person at no charge that day, while parking and regular ride fees remain separate. Some ambient noise remains, and the fair gets louder again at noon.

For teens, check the youth entry rule before arranging a drop-off: on Fridays and Saturdays, under-18s need their parent age 21 or older to enter throughout the day; Sunday–Thursday that rule applies after 5 p.m. Nursing families can ask about the designated space in the Goodman Building.

Check your date’s gate, ride and building hours separately. Weather can change operations. For a gentler indoor alternative on another day, our South Carolina State Museum guide covers a different Columbia family outing. The best fair day leaves enough energy for getting everyone home.

Before booking, confirm current prices, entry rules, opening hours, and road conditions with the official provider.
