Columbia, South Carolina · Checked October 7, 2026
For an indoor October outing, build a South Carolina State Museum day around one show and a few favorite exhibits. The Halloween laser show adds seasonal fun—but buying every extra is not necessary.
HalloScream Laser Lights: October 3–31, 2026
The museum lists HalloScream Laser Lights for October 3–31, with a 30-minute running time. It pairs laser visuals with familiar Halloween music in the planetarium and requires an additional ticket.
Do not rely on the times printed below the show description: the official page says those times were valid only through October 4. For an October 7 or later visit, use the date selector in the museum’s ticket portal to see the actual available showtimes.
Check the dated Halloween show listing. Choose the show first, then plan your gallery time around it; this avoids arriving with children ready for a show that has already started.
Which ticket is worth buying?
| Option | Adult | Child 3–12 | 2 adults + 2 children |
|---|---|---|---|
| General admission | $13 | $10 | $46 |
| Admission + one show | $18 | $15 | $66 |
| Admission + two shows | $21 | $18 | $78 |
These are listed ticket subtotals, excluding any checkout charges, food or shopping. Senior rates for ages 62+ are $11, $16 and $19 respectively. Add-on choices are planetarium and/or 4D shows; select the date and show available in checkout.
Our pick for a first visit: one show if the children enjoy theater experiences. For this sample family, that adds $20 over basic admission. Two shows add another $12, but also create a second fixed appointment. A lower price per show is not a bargain if a tired child wants to leave.

A separate discount worth checking
Museums for All offers $2 general admission per eligible person, up to four household members, with the required benefits documentation and photo ID. The museum lists SNAP/EBT, WIC and Medicaid eligibility. This is not a promise of $2 admission for every visitor or an included show package; review the documentation and admission terms.
Will the show suit your child?
“Suitable for all ages” does not mean every child will enjoy darkness, loud music or moving light. For a child unsure about theaters, basic admission may be the better first visit.
The planetarium has a tilted dome and can be very dark. The separate 4D theater may include moving seats, water, wind, smells and abrupt lighting changes. Ask about the specific show and exit seating before committing. Sensory bags and noise-canceling headphones are available by request. Accessibility and theater guidance.

Arrival, parking and a manageable route
Go to 301 Gervais Street, Columbia. The museum lists free vehicle parking on its visit-planning information; accessible spaces are first come, first served. Galleries open Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sunday, noon–5 p.m. Monday is closed.
Our suggested visit is 2–3 hours with one show. Start by locating your theater and confirming the show time. Choose one open gallery before the performance, take a restroom break, then decide whether everyone wants another gallery afterward. Elevators serve all four floors, and family restrooms are on the first and fourth floors.
Make lunch a separate stop before or after the visit; this guide does not assume an on-site café or permission to eat in galleries. Keep the afternoon flexible rather than booking another timed attraction immediately afterward.
What to see while renovations continue
The current exhibition list spans art, history and science. For October 10 onward, it advertises the opening of In the Making: Contemporary Craft from South Carolina. Let each child pick a material—wood, clay or fiber—and look for how an artist transformed it.
The second-floor page carries the dinosaur and habitat closure notice. Reopening is an expectation, not a guarantee. Checking it before a long drive is more useful than relying on an old photo of the dinosaur gallery.
