McWane can keep a curious family busy for hours. The real decision is whether you need the IMAX add-on—or whether dinosaurs, water play and hands-on exhibits already make a full day.

Start here
  • Two adults + two children ages 2–12: $75.80 for Adventure Halls, or $93.80 for the documentary combo, before any checkout charges.
  • Parking deck: $5 for nonmembers; entrance on 2nd Avenue North.
  • Little-kid space: Itty Bitty Magic City welcomes children 6 and under with caregivers.
  • Our suggested visit: 3–4 hours, including a break.
  • Important: tickets are date-specific and nonrefundable. Monday and Tuesday are normally closed.

Adventure Halls or IMAX combo?

TicketAdult 13–64Child 2–12Senior 65+
Adventure Halls$20.95$16.95$19.95
Adventure Halls + one documentary$25.95$20.95$24.95
Documentary only$9.95$8.95$8.95

Children under 2 are listed free. The combo covers one IMAX documentary, not a feature-length movie. The official ticket page also displays group prices lower down; those require an advance reservation for 15 or more people and are not ordinary family rates.

For two adults and two paying children, adding deck parking gives a listed subtotal of $80.80 for Adventure Halls or $98.80 for the combo. Food, shopping and any checkout charges remain extra. The combo adds $18 for this family. Choose it if the film is a real priority, not just because it is offered.

Our recommendation for restless preschoolers is to begin with the exhibits. For older children who enjoy documentaries, choose a showtime that leaves enough time for both a meal and the galleries. Confirm the running time before buying; “documentary” does not mean every film has the same length.

Check eligibility before paying full price

McWane’s Museums for All offer is $4 per person for up to four family members when an EBT card is presented on arrival. Four eligible admissions total $16; with the nonmember deck fee, that is $21 before extras. Do not assume IMAX is included. Official admission assistance and visitor information.

The $5 deck has a height limit

Use the deck entrance on 2nd Avenue North, rather than circling the main address at 200 19th Street North. Clearance is 6 feet 8 inches. A roof box or tall vehicle may rule it out, so measure the complete vehicle height before relying on it.

The museum lists $5 nonmember parking, paid at exit by accepted cash, card or token; members park free. Its parking page lists free metered street parking on Saturdays, Sundays and state/federal holidays, but always read the specific sign and restrictions. Deck details and parking map.

Build the route around the youngest child

Ages 6 and under: allow real play time

Itty Bitty Magic City includes a pretend main street, toddler space, water play and a climbing structure. The official family page welcomes children 6 and under with caregivers. Pack a spare shirt for water play and avoid making this a five-minute stop between older siblings’ priorities.

Older children: connect fossils to Alabama

The Alabama Dinosaurs and Sea Monsters areas give the trip a local story. Ask: “What evidence tells us this place used to be underwater?” Then look for an exhibit that answers it. The paleontology guide describes dinosaur discoveries and ancient ocean creatures; research collections are not the same as unrestricted visitor access.

For mixed ages, plan one shared fossil stop, one little-kid play block and a break. If two adults are present, splitting briefly can work better than asking older children to wait through the entire preschool session. Agree on a meeting place and time first.

Eat before the café closes

Bean Sprouts Café is listed open until 3 p.m. Wednesday–Sunday, earlier than the museum’s 5 p.m. closing. It offers a children’s menu and adult options; check current menu prices separately. Discuss specific food allergies with staff rather than assuming every item meets your needs. Café details.

Typical museum hours are Wednesday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sunday, noon–5 p.m. For a rainy fall-break day, this can be the whole outing. Save optional shopping or another attraction for the energy you actually have left.
